ChatGPT Ads in the UK: what they are and whether you should test them

ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements that appear underneath ChatGPT's answers. They went live in the UK on 6 June 2026, and UK businesses have been able to buy them through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager beta since late June. For most businesses the right move now is a small, well-measured test, not a big budget shift.

Here is what you need to know before you spend anything.

How ChatGPT Ads work

The ads sit below ChatGPT's response and are labelled as sponsored. OpenAI has said the ads don't change the answer ChatGPT gives.

The big difference from Google Ads is targeting. Instead of bidding on keywords, you give OpenAI "context hints": short descriptions of the kinds of conversations where your product or service is relevant. The system then matches your ad to conversations on that topic.

So rather than bidding on "accountant Glasgow", you might describe conversations about a small business owner choosing an accountant, sorting out their first tax return or setting up as a limited company.

Who sees them

Ads are only shown to people using the free version of ChatGPT or the lower-cost Go plan. People on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans don't see ads.

That matters for planning. If your customers are mainly professionals whose employer pays for ChatGPT, a share of them won't see your ads at all.

How you pay

Campaigns can be bought on a cost per thousand impressions basis for reach, or a cost per click basis for traffic. OpenAI has also started rolling out optimisation towards conversions for accounts that track conversions with its pixel or Conversions API.

There is no minimum spend for UK self-serve accounts, which makes a controlled test practical for smaller businesses.

Who should test ChatGPT Ads now

It is worth a test if:

  • People research your product or service by asking questions, not just by searching a brand or a product name. Think of "which CRM is best for a small agency" or "what should I look for in a hearing aid".
  • You already have solid conversion tracking, so you can compare results fairly with Google and Meta.
  • You can ring-fence a test budget without starving campaigns that already work.

It is probably not the place to start if your Google Ads aren't converting well yet, or if your tracking isn't in place. Fix the channel that is already proven first.

How to run a sensible first test

  1. Set one success measure before you start. Cost per lead or cost per sale, using the same definition you use for Google Ads.
  2. Ring-fence the budget. Take it from a test pot, not from your best performing campaigns.
  3. Write context hints from real customer questions. Your sales team, enquiry forms and reviews are the best source.
  4. Send traffic to a page that answers the question. Someone arriving from a conversation expects detail, not a generic homepage.
  5. Run it long enough to judge. Give it several weeks and enough clicks to compare against your other channels.
  6. Decide on the numbers. If the cost per result is in line with or better than Google and Meta, scale it gradually. If not, stop and keep the learning.

What we expect to change

This is a new platform and it is changing quickly. In the US, OpenAI added cost per click bidding, custom audiences and conversion optimisation within a few months of launch, and we would expect the UK product to keep developing. That is another reason to test small now, learn how your audience behaves, and be ready to scale if the numbers justify it.

Our view

ChatGPT Ads are a genuine new place to reach people while they are making decisions. They are not a replacement for Google Ads or Meta Ads, and they are not worth chasing just because they are new. Treat them like any other channel: set a target, measure properly and keep what pays.
